Learning the art of modern dance doesn't have to be something as difficult as you might imagine. The fact is, many people are finding themselves in a certain point in their lives where they want to learn something new. Why not let it be modern dance.

There are many benefits that come with it. For one thing, there is a great amount of stamina that is required. That means that you will be getting a lot more exercise which is a very good thing in this day and age. The truth is, many of us sit around way too long, between work and rest. A good majority of us don't get the exercise we really need which can lead to many serious illnesses and conditions.

Modern dance began in the 20th century, allowing the dancer to use his or her emotions to choreograph their own routine. Very often, new steps are invented, which is very different from structured steps as as in classical or traditional ballet. Basically, it's freestyle dancing. In the beginning, these dancers usually performed barefoot and sported costumes that were quite revealing.

One characteristic of this type of dance is very evident whereby the dancers use their weight and gravity to exhibit certain movements. This is obviously the complete opposite of ballet where every move is supposed to appear light and airy. There are often deliberate falls by the dancers and they reject standing tall and erect.

The key to a great routine is for the dancer to express a certain feeling or emotion. Therefore, this feeling or emotion that must be determined prior to the dance being performed. Depending on the dancer, the emotions that are being conveyed toward the audience could be a story that they are telling; this could be a happy or sad story.

This truly is a type of dance that anyone can partake in with some instruction. Obviously, since it isn't a structured dance in any way, it doesn't require years of practice. However, with experience and practice the individual dancer will improve on the way they perform their steps and the way they convey their emotions to their audience. It is a great way for any individual, regardless of age and physical shape to get moving.

Of course, it has changed and developed over the years, growing more in sophistication and in technique. Today, there are more technical aspects involved, even though the pieces of this type of dance depends much on the heart, soul, and the mind of the individual dancer.
