Many people see dance as being the traditional learning of generic steps and moves. However, as with many things, dance is constantly evolving. An increasingly popular form of dancing is modern dance. This focuses on a dancers own interpretations, more than on structured steps which people would associate with dancing.
The origination of this type of dance can seen as being during the 1900s where the classical or ballet dancers were seen to be rebelling against the rigid rules in place governing classical ballet, in order to rebel against the traditional classical ballet, dancers done numerous things. One of the most notable was the nonconforming to structured routines. But it went deeper than just the routines or steps. The costumes worn also changed as well as the style of footwear and the type of dancing preferred, which changed from structured, to a more free style. These modern dancers caused outrage as they went completely against the traditional norms. Instead they opted for revealing outfits and tended to dance barefoot, instead of wearing ballet shoes. These pioneers paved the way for the evolution of dance, which is still continuing today. Dance today, is completely different to what it once was. Traditionally, dance was merely a form of entertainment, now it is seen as a way to express emotions. Dance was once to portray certain emotions for the sake of entertainment, now dancers can use dance to portray their innermost feelings. As things evolve, they often become more complex. This is the case with dance certainly, now dancers before choreographing dances, must consider the emotions they want to portray and how best to portray these. It is not so much just about the dances anymore, but the music and passion behind, which makes it truly spectacular. As well as this, different costumes are also used to heighten the performance. The whole thing is carefully structured. The clothes, lighting, music are not just for show, or there to make the dance more interesting. These are all carefully thought out factors which are meant to enhance the performance, by linking to the subject matter, this can make it far more powerful. Modern dance is usually focused on an aspect close to the dancer's heart. This allows for it to be a truly personal, passionate and breathtaking experience. Dance will continue to change and evolve, due to dancers continually taking it to a whole new level. |
